Inspiration
Jack the Ripper. The name just evokes such wonderful ideas. Britain's most famous serial killer, an unknown villain who was never caught, and who continues to captivate the imagination, over a hundred years since he terrorised the East End of London.
In 2005 I was reading a sourcebook on the Ripper murders, and it mentioned that fact that in all likelihood, if the police of the time had had the resources and technology available to them today, the Ripper would have been caught, and probably before he murdered his final victims.
Which got me thinking... what if the Ripper did commit his murders today?
The book
When a woman's body is discovered in the East End of London, the police launch a murder investigation. The seemingly motiveless attack and the brutality with which it is carried out stun the police, who are loathe to reveal the full horror of the attack. When a reporter correctly predicts who the next victim will be, and where they will be found, the police arrest him for both murders. But the reporter has spotted what the police did not. The names, dates and locations of the murders match the first two victims of Jack the Ripper. Then the letters begin to appear...
Are the police dealing with a killer inspired by Ripperology, or something far more sinister?
