The Long Watch

Inspiration

Thanks to Jay for suggesting the working title.

Originally with a working title of The Apocalypse Watch, this is a story idea that I have had since I was 18, and have worked at, on and off, for ten years now. I recently discovered some old note books of mine with some scribblings I made about the story, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the character names haven't changed over the years, although the plot hopefully has some more depth to it.

The book

Gideon Strangechild is a former military officer, now field commander for the most secretive paramilitary force in the world - a clandestine group operating from deep within the Vatican, under direct orders from the powerful Cardinal Mancini.

In the dying hours of the Long Watch, an entity breaches the void between worlds, moving and attacking with impunity. Despite the danger, Gideon is separated from his team, sent by Mancini to confront his own father about a dark secret from Gideon's past.

Without their leader, the members of the Watch must find the entity and stop it before it strikes again. None of them realise however that the true threat comes not from below, but from above.

Current status

I am about one third of the way through the story, thanks to NaNoWriMo. I aim to finish the first draft in 2008. First draft will be available for review to a few select people shortly thereafter.
